PBL: Project Based Learning 2015-2016
Guiding Question: Looking at events between 1900 and 2015 and putting all personal opinions aside, do you think that people who teach peace or people who teach hate have more impact on the history of the world? Note that the question does not ask who do you think is right or wrong, good or evil, helpful or hurtful, but who do you think has more of an impact on history?
General Info: You will research ten pre-selected historical figures that are remembered for various historical events during the 20th century. Do not focus on any one person but the legacy of the group as a whole. The toughest parts of this project will not be the research, but in meeting deadlines and thinking objectively about the question - so essentially we are researching if being peaceful/helpful holds your place in history more or less than being hateful/hurtful.
General Info: You can email me a copy of all your work as long as it is organized very neatly and sent via your school given email address, I would prefer a word document instead of google docs, but if that is what you want go for it. You can also submit most work through your discovery education account (this will keep a receipt for you proving that you did submit things by their deadline hint hint).
Final Product: A voiced over video presentation or 1940's style radio broadcast displayed on YouTube

Parent & Student CommitmentParents - You are absolutely 100% allowed to assist your student with this project. Help them in any way possible, but please do not do the project for them. Most of your students already have a YouTube account, but if they do not, please set one up for them making sure that you block the ability for others to leave comments on the uploaded video. Depending on the level of comfort you have with your student being on the internet, I would suggest that you create the account and keep the login and password only under your control. Students will at most only need to sign onto the account and then click upload one time. Nothing more or less.
Students - You are absolutely 100% allowed to have your parents help you with this project, but they should not do the work for you. Please make sure that you do your best and do not abuse your parent's kindness in helping you. I expect your full committment in doing excellent work that is genuinely yours and not cut/paste off the internet. No Wikipedia and I strongly urge everyone not to use Google Docs for a million different reasons - many of you found this out when WCPSS access to Google docs went down over the snow days. Do your best, have fun learning, no cheating, and really explore the topics before you make any decisions. |
Deadlines This project will be graded on a multi tiered schedule. You will have classwork, homework, quiz and test/project grades all effected during this project. Deadlines for classwork and homework will not be able to be made up and groups that do not submit completed work by the deadline will receive a grade of zero that cannot be changed even if work is submitted at a later date. Only the final project will be able to receive late work points. Always save a copy of your work on a flash drive or in your desktop files, if you choose to use Google Docs and it goes down you still have to turn in the work when it is due, I have warned since day 1 not to use Wikipedia and google in your work. Just an FYI...
Deadlines that count towards your classwork/homework categories: 1. list of people for peace (due by Friday Feb. 12th) 2. list of people for hate (due by Friday Feb. 12th) 3. student & parent signed letter approving these topics and working at home and YouTube 4. student & parent signed letter acknowledging progress 5. student conferences, create list of emails/phone numbers/parents names, etc... (Due by Tuesday Feb 2) 6. student & parent signed letter acknowledging group members and out of class responsibility (Due by Friday Feb. 5th) 7. student signed letters for group progress Deadlines that count towards your quiz category: 1. list of quotes for all ten historical people (due on discovery ed or email by Weds January 20) 2. all research for peace people (due on discovery ed or email by Friday January 22) 3. all research for hate people (due on discovery ed or email by Friday January 29) 4. Script Rough Draft (due on Tuesday March 1st) 5. Blueprint of slides Deadlines that count towards your test/project category: 1. final project (due: When you arrive to class already on YouTube by Friday April 15th) |
GradingGrades are given as a group and not on an individual basis. If a group has members who do not work or do all the work, all members will receive the same grade - this is why parents and students will be required to sign contracts prior to selecting group members.
Only a 100% completed project may be turned in. That means that there are only three possible grades you can earn on this project: 100 - for a project that meets all criteria and is turned in on time, 80 - for a project that is turned in late (late is defined as not complete at the moment it is due until grades must be posted for WCPSS report cards), 0 - a project that was not turned in. |
