Students will, more than likely, have a basic familiarity with the personal computer and other personal technology tools such as smart phones, iPods, etc. Begin by discussing what tools students own or use on a regular basis. Ask them if they remember the first computer they owned or used. Show them pictures of older devices such as the Apple IIe. . Students will have discussed the importance of technological innovations throughout their middle school social studies classes. They will also have a familiarity with Capitalism and with the state of technological development in the post-Cold War world. Instructional Sequence (before, during, and after instruction) Step 1 Students will construct a timeline using cards of different events in the history of modern computing (events and images are from the MuseumofComputerHistory.org) in small groups. Step 2 The teacher will lead a discussion about the timeline of the development of the computer and present the proper order of events: 1939 - Hewlett Packard formed. Disney is one of their first customers. 1942 - The Atonasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) is built at Iowa State College. By many this is considered to be the invention of the first real computer. 1943 - The US Navy and Army funded projects to help train pilots and test weapons. 1960 - The first modem (a device for sending computer data over phone lines) is invented. 1971 - The first email was sent. The message was "QWERTYUIOP". 1972 - Atari game company is launched with their first game “Pong”. 1974 - Xerox invented the mouse. 1976 - Steve Wozkniak creates the first Apple computer. 1980 - The first hard disk drive was created by Seagate Technology, fueling the computer revolution. 1981 - Microsoft makes its first mark with the release of the Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS). 1983 - Apple introduces the first operating system that uses graphics. 1990 - The internet is born with the invention of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Step 3 The students will read two versions of the history of competition between Apple Computers and Microsoft and answer the following questions about each article in a Think-Pair-Share: 1. What is the article about? 2. How are the articles similar/different? 3. Cite examples of bias in each article.
